PBT: Pressure — Existing, Not Emergent
A point of understanding, in Matthew’s own words (2026-07-22): PBT doesn’t claim pressure arises from particle pushes, as if pressure were a secondary effect generated by something more basic underneath it. Pressure simply exists in the medium — the same direct, unmysterious way air pressure exists in a room, or water pressure exists at depth in the ocean. There’s no separate mechanism that produces it; it’s a basic property of the medium being there at all.
What the medium actually is
Instead of the vacuum of space — literally empty, nothing there — PBT holds that space is filled with particles, similar in kind to air or water molecules, though not identical to either. This isn’t a metaphor; it’s the literal physical claim. Where a fluid dynamicist thinks about air molecules filling a room, PBT asks the same question about the space between planets, stars, and galaxies, and answers it the same way: full, not empty.
What that medium does
Two direct consequences follow from taking this seriously:
- It’s the substance light and radio waves actually travel through. Rather than propagating through nothing (the standard picture, where light needs no medium at all), PBT holds this particle medium is what a light or radio wave is a disturbance in — the same relationship sound has to air, or a ripple has to water.
- Its particles are fast and small enough that drag on large bodies is negligible. This is PBT’s own direct answer to the historical objection that sank Georges-Louis Le Sage’s 18th-century version of push gravity: if space is full of moving particles, shouldn’t planets feel measurable drag and heating from constantly colliding with them? PBT’s answer is that the particles are moving fast enough and are small enough that the drag they impart to something as large as a planet or a spacecraft is negligible — real in principle, too small to matter in practice.
How this differs from Pascal’s pressure
Blaise Pascal’s 17th-century pressure work — still the historical root of “pressure” as a serious physical quantity, and the word this site’s whole subject takes its name from — describes force transmitted through a confined fluid or gas: a bounded volume of matter everyone already agrees is there (air in a room, water in a pipe). PBT’s claim is a step further back: that the medium filling all of space, everywhere, unconfined, is real in the same way — and that pressure is simply a property of that medium existing, not something a separate mechanism has to produce.
