Who he was
Murray Gell-Mann (1929–2019) was an American theoretical physicist. He introduced the quark model of hadrons and the “Eightfold Way” classification scheme for particles, receiving the 1969 Nobel Prize in Physics.
What he’s known for on this site
In 1962, Gell-Mann (and independently Yuval Ne’eman) used the Eightfold Way to arrange the known spin-3/2 baryons into the Baryon Decuplet — a triangular pattern with one empty slot. Gell-Mann predicted the missing particle’s mass, charge, and lifetime directly from the pattern’s own regularity; the $\Omega^-$ baryon was discovered at Brookhaven in 1964 with almost exactly the predicted properties, one of the cleanest confirmed predictions in particle physics.

The quark model and the baryon decuplet are core, experimentally validated parts of the Standard Model.
