Who he was
John Archibald Wheeler (1911–2008) was an American theoretical physicist, a central figure in 20th-century relativity and nuclear physics. He worked with Bohr on nuclear fission theory in the 1930s and later trained a generation of physicists (including Richard Feynman and Kip Thorne). He’s also credited with popularizing the terms “black hole” and “wormhole.”

Alongside Niels Bohr, Wheeler co-developed the Bohr-Wheeler fissionability parameter in 1939, the condition under which a nucleus becomes unstable against spontaneous fission — the same liquid-drop framework underlying the semi-empirical mass formula.
