Who he was
James Clerk Maxwell (1831–1879) was a Scottish physicist. His four equations unifying electricity, magnetism, and light (published in final form in 1865) are the complete, exact classical theory of electromagnetism, and directly predicted that light itself is an electromagnetic wave.
What he’s known for on this site
The Magnetic Dipole Field formula used throughout this site’s magnetism content is derived directly from Maxwell’s equations (equivalently, from the Biot-Savart law) in the far-field limit. Paper 3 explicitly frames PBT’s own magnetism claims as an attempt at mechanical unification “without fields” — a proposed alternative to Maxwell’s field-based description, not a modification of its equations.
