Who he was
Enrico Fermi (1901–1954) was an Italian-American physicist, one of the very few 20th-century physicists to make major contributions on both the theoretical and experimental sides — he built the first nuclear reactor (Chicago Pile-1, 1942) and developed foundational theory in nuclear and particle physics. He received the 1938 Nobel Prize in Physics.
What he’s known for on this site
Fermi’s 1933–34 theory of beta decay introduced the first quantitative model of the weak nuclear force, giving the Fermi Weak Decay Rate formula ($\Gamma_{weak}\approx G_F^2m^5/192\pi^3$) still used (in refined form) today. This site’s own 2026-07-21 audit found PBT’s papers had misapplied this formula to neutron beta decay in a way that didn’t match the real formula’s own inputs — see Paper 10’s revision for the full correction.

Fermi’s weak-interaction theory (now absorbed into the Standard Model’s electroweak sector) is extensively confirmed nuclear and particle physics.
