Who he was
Archimedes of Syracuse (c. 287–212 BC) was an ancient Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, and inventor — widely regarded as one of the greatest scientists of antiquity. Alongside his work on buoyancy, he made foundational contributions to geometry, calculated an accurate approximation of π, and designed practical machines (the Archimedes screw, compound pulleys) still recognizable today.

Archimedes’ principle, worked out over two thousand years ago, states that an object submerged in a fluid experiences an upward buoyant force equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces — a direct, literal consequence of pressure increasing with depth: the fluid pressure pushing up on an object’s bottom is greater than the pressure pushing down on its top, and that difference is the buoyant force, not a separate mechanism layered on top of it. It’s referenced in Why Pressure as one of several cases where pressure isn’t an analogy for the underlying physics — it’s the literal explanation, settled and unrevised for over two millennia.
