Catalog: Unproven Systems At Large
Serious, peer-reviewed, credentialed alternative or extension theories — real research programs, pursued by real physicists at real institutions — that remain experimentally untested or unconfirmed. Different from Fringe Ideas specifically because these went through, and continue to go through, mainstream institutional peer review; different from Generally Accepted But Unproven because these aren’t the field’s working consensus, just live open possibilities within it.
- Einstein-Aether Theory — Jacobson & Mattingly, 2001 — a dynamical preferred-frame extension of GR, tightly constrained but not ruled out by GW170817. The real framework PBT’s own aether field is built on.
- String theory — a mathematically rich candidate for quantum gravity/unification with no confirmed experimental prediction to date, decades into active research. (Dedicated page not yet written.)
- Loop quantum gravity — a rival quantum-gravity program to string theory, quantizing spacetime itself; also without experimental confirmation. (Dedicated page not yet written.)
- MOND (Modified Newtonian Dynamics) — a real, published alternative to particulate dark matter for galactic rotation curves — fits some data well, struggles with cluster-scale and CMB observations. Directly relevant to PBT’s own rotation-curve claims; not yet cross-compared on this site.
- Superfluid dark matter — Berezhiani, Khoury, and others — dark matter that behaves like a particle fluid at large scales and a MOND-like superfluid inside galaxies. Named in Dark Matter Is the Medium as a real precedent for PBT’s own “one medium doing double duty” idea.
None of these are wrong in the way Disproven Theories are wrong — they’re open, live possibilities the field itself hasn’t ruled out yet, just not (yet) required by the data either.
